I più bei libri svizzeri

Museo Civico Villa dei Cedri
28 August — 25 September 2016

Every year, the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) organises the competition "The most beautiful Swiss books", with which it honours outstanding achievements in the fields of design and book production. The competition also highlights books that deserve special attention and have been created in keeping with the rhythm of our times. After examining all the entries, the jury, chaired for the first time by Gilles Gavillet, awarded prizes to 18 books from 2015.

The jury evaluates the submitted applications according to criteria such as design, graphics and typography with a special focus on innovation and originality. It also examines the quality of printing and cover, the binding and the materials used.

For the first time, Ticino will host the temporary exhibition, which presents all the books participating in the competition, before continuing on to Basel and Lausanne. The exhibition at Villa dei Cedri is also accompanied by a rich programme of meetings and events for families.

Forme infinite. Un omaggio al Ticino del ‘900 nelle collezioni di Villa dei Cedri

(Indefinite forms. A homage to the Ticino of the 20th century in the collections of the Villa dei Cedri)

The exhibition shows works between figuration and abstraction by Ticino artists or artists particularly associated with Ticino from the period 1910 to 2010. It documents the relationship between the existing collections and shows how the collection's aspirations have evolved over the last few decades. The works highlight the Museum's interest in the diversity of artistic expressions of the 20th century. Its collections bear witness to the passage of an era, between realism and symbolism, and describe the important crisis in the representation of the visible that took place during the last century.
